On 5 February 2017, the Sydney Morning Herald published a story “Sydney faces sports field shortage”, stating that synthetic fields have become popular because of “lower ongoing maintenance costs”.

The Western Australia Department of Sport and Recreation in its“Natural Grass vs. Synthetic Turf Surfaces Study Final Report” concludes that the 25 year life cycle cost for AFL/Cricket (based on initial capital cost of $358,000 for natural and $1,565,000 for synthetic) to be:

Dear Supporter,

Mosman Council voted unanimously at its meeting Tuesday night to defer its artificial turf “project” until the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust and the National Parks and Wildlife Service commence a joint planning process in 2016.

On October 21, SHFT and NPWS announced that they would work together to create a new unified plan for the whole of Middle Head. This process, along with public consultation, is expected to start sometime in 2016.

Flawed Council Report Claims Public Want Middle Head Oval to be Synthetic

A SynPlaySurfaces CnclReport 10Nov15 last week claims that public feedback “largely support” the conversion of Middle Head Oval into an artificial playing field (synthetic turf).

In addition to identifiable written submissions, Council staff have also included a flawed, anonymous on-line survey (using “SurveyMonkey” software), giving each equal weight.

HPG has investigated SurveyMonkey thoroughly and believe that it is impossible to verify that respondents correspond to unique real people.

Last August, jointly with Mosman Parks and Bushland Inc., HPG …

I have 3 main concerns:

This development application is not consistent with the SHFT comprehensive Plan, nor is it consistent with the SHFT Management Plan – Mosman No. 7 – Middle Head, even …

No to Aged care facility!

Comment8 December 2013By B WorrallReproduced with permission

I want to commend the Harbour Trust for the good work they have done in Mosman thus far. But I am opposed to the proposed aged care facility.

In my experience with a family member at such a facility I can vouch that views/harbour are totally irrelevant to residents. So why build this development  on one of the prime spots in Mosman. It’s an outrage! Residents in these facilities generally pine to be in their own homes and often spend …

the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust had a mandate to protect the beautiful foreshores of Sydney Harbour

Submission to Sydney Harbour Federation Trust6 December 2013By Kate RaeReproduced with permission

Dear Trustees,

RE: Draft Amendment to Management Plan and Development Application for Aged Care Facility

It was my understanding that the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust (SHFT), had a mandate to protect the beautiful foreshores of Sydney Harbour and “create a lasting legacy” for all Australians to enjoy “the pristine natural bushland” (quotes from the SHFT website).

The recent proposal at Middle Head for an Aged Care facility seems to be totally contrary to this purpose and suggests …

The land held by the Trust belongs to ALL Australians

Comment5 December 2013Name withheld by requestReproduced with permission

[I] fully support the objections as set out in the letter from Baker & McKenzie dated 2 December addressed to the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust.

In particular I most whole heartily agree with the comments that the Trust does not have the power to make the proposed amendments, the size and value of the development is inappropriate for a short term use and it amounts to a ‘sale’ of public land for NO consideration. The land held by the …

Traffic projections are superficial and misleading

Submission to Sydney Harbour Federation Trust5 December 2013By John and Sandra AllenReproduced with permission

Dear Sirs,

This submission opposes the application and the proposed plan amendments.

TRAFFIC IMPLICATIONS.

We claim the status of directly-affected persons, as residents of Middle Head Road, which carries all of the increased traffic which is generated by the Trust’s tenants.

On 13 November we submitted to the Trust comments on the ‘study’ and report containing traffic projections which form part of the application. We renew those comments as part of this submission. As noted, the …

Vision of Trust to "provide places that will greatly enrich the cultural life of the city and the nation" threatened by proposed development

Linda Bergin addressed a well attended public meeting on Thursday 5 December 2013 to discuss next actions to save Middle Head and ensure that the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust will continue to implement the original vision “To provide a lasting legacy for the people of Australia by helping to create one of the finest foreshore parks in the world and provide places that will greatly enrich the cultural life of the city and the nation.”

Dear Lady,

Re: Proposal 10  Terminal to Aged Care/Retirement Facility.

I made my submission on the above proposal on 29th  November 2013.  After consideration, I have observed further details of the proposal and the Trust’s position, and direct this missive to you because of serious concern.

Amongst many objectives, the SHFT Act specifically states:“to maximize public access to Trust land”; and “to establish and manage suitable Trust land as a park on behalf of the Commonwealth—- …

To: Sydney Harbour Federation Trust

Dear M/Ms

Submission Re Draft Management Plan for Middle Head Precinct
Proposed Development – Residential Care Facility

I am writing to express concern about the proposed Residential Care Facility (“the development”) for the Middle Head Precinct. My concern is threefold;

The nature and size of the proposed development
The apparent lack of community consultation
The precedent it creates if proceeded with

Size and scope is out of keeping

The proposal is superficially appealing, particularly …

Middle Head proposal is an alienation of public land

Submission – Middle Head Precinct

To: Sydney Harbour Federation Trust

Dear Sir/Madam,

Submission re Draft Management Plan for Middle Head Precinct
Proposed Development – Residential Care Facility – Middle head (‘Development Application’)

1. Background

My late husband Don Goodsir, OAM, and Linda Bergin OAM, were instrumental in raising community awareness and action to prevent the Defence Department selling the ‘surplus defence lands’ in 1996 for private development. They were founding members of the Headland Preservation Group (HPG) to protect these lands from development. The HPG became a powerful lobby group with …

It would be a very sad legacy to allow a large scale development to ruin Middle Head

Submission to Sydney Harbour Federation Trust4 December 2013Name withheld by requestReproduced with permission

Dear Sydney Harbour Federation Trust

I wish to object in the strongest possible terms to the proposed development and amendment to the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust [SHFT] for Terminal 10 on Middle Head.

The draft amendment and development proposal go against the spirit in which SHFT was set up and against the parameters set out in that Act and its associated Trust, nor is it consistent with the SHFT Comprehensive Plan nor the Middle Head …

Mosman Town Hall (Senior Citizen’s Centre)

AGENDA

Brief slide show on current proposal
Q&A
What do you think should happen to the 10 Terminal Site?

Dear Mosman Resident,

I know it’s a busy time of the year but we can’t allow the development of 10 Terminal site on Middle Head to go ahead. Please come to the public meeting.

If this development is allowed it would be a large scale NEW RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT instead of adaptive reuse limited to open space and park purposes. According to …

Not in favour of the plan

Comment submitted to Sydney Harbour Federation Trust

From Norma DaisleyPublished with permission

I am not in favour of the plan to build an aged-care facility on the former defence site on Middle Head.

Mosman does not have sufficient parks. We need to retain the current open spaces in Mosman.

The traffic in Mosman is as slow as a wet week. Think of the extra traffic burden a development such as the proposed development will bring.

Dear Sir,

Re: Proposal – Aged Care Facility/Retirement Home at Middle Head.

Having lived in Mosman for over 40 years, and having been a strong supporter of the original movement that prevented the sale of Defence lands at Middle Head to developers, I feel I am entitled to voice my opinion regarding possible uses and developments on the above lands.

These lands were saved from development with the …

SUBMISSION ‘Middle Head Precinct’

By Brian WilderPublished with permission

I write as a former Committee Member of the Headland Preservation Group over many years.

It has to be said that the SHFT have done a wonderful job cleaning up this huge site and restoring many of the buildings and adapting them for appropriate use in the Park. This has been done with great style and to a very high standard, and the community is in their debt.

This makes it even more puzzling as to why the Trust has come …

Is it worth getting Tony Abbott involved?

From Maggie DrummondTo: [email protected] 27 November 2013

Thank you for this email. The meeting was good although too few people there. Is it worth getting Tony Abbott involved? After all it is his electorate and I believe he rides his bike there. Do you know his attitude to this proposal?

Also, I believe this should be a Sydney-wide issue – not just a Mosman issue.  Alan Jones?
